Christo Coetzee was born in Johannesburg and graduated from Wits with a fine art degree. His early work is mainly figurative, stiffly posed, formal, but far from academic and is highly individualistic in style. There was then a ten year break where little of his work was seen.  He travelled widely in Europe and the Far East, from where Coetzee developed his later style. Berman describes his work of the 1960’s as a poetic response of a particular creative personality to the stimulus of avant-garde enquiry. This could be applied to his approach until his death in 2001.
