| Clement Sénèque
was born in Phoenix, Mauritius and settled in Durban in 1908. In 1924 he held a one-man exhibition in Paris. In 1925 he returned to Durban, established an architectural practice and began to take an active interest in Natal art-life.
Sénèque died at the age of 33 after only five years of painting in South Africa, and only one individual exhibition. His work shows some influence of Frank Brangwyn also his personal feelings relating to architecture. The result is a restrained palette with characteristic emphasis on vertical-horizontal construction. |
