Edward Roworth was born in Lancashire, UK and lived in South Africa from 1902. He studied at the Slade School of Art and the art of fresco in Florence. He had numerous solo exhibitions and some jointly with Wenning, Naudè and Spilhaus. He painted Cape and Natal landscapes often including houses. Roworth also painted formal portraits. He worked in oils and pastel. He was highly influential and managed to dominate the South African art scene for many years. He endorsed all conservatism and and abhorred all modernism. This did not however detract from the popularity of his work.
