| Jacob Pierneef was born in Pretoria. He and his family spent time in exile in Holland during the Anglo-Boer war where he received some formal training at the Rotterdam Academy. On return to South Africa, although employed variously, he continued to paint. Early influences and guidance was from Anton van Wouw and Frans Oerder. George Smithard taught him graphic art and the principles of etching and woodcuts. Inspiration came from San rock art and the decorative art of the black people of South Africa. In 1930
Pierneef was commissioned to create murals for the Johannesburg station, the undertaking took three years. Several other official commissions followed. Much time towards the end of his life was spent in the field. “The landscape was the artist’s oyster; faithful naturalistic drawings are a final affirmation of his lifelong homage.” |
