Spilhaus, Nita (1878-1967)

Nita Spilhaus was born in Lisbon and studied in Germany at the Lubeck School of Art and at the Kunst Akademie in Munich. She came to live in Capetown in 1907. Spilhaus was close friends with Pieter Wenning, who left a permanent influence on her painting style, but also knew Ruth Prowse, Florence Zerffi and Hugo Naudé.

Her work is characterized by her love of trees, a subject that runs through much of her work.
